Since its release earlier this year, Jan Fromm’s Nice has already attracted lots of attention–from mentions in The Brand Identity to TYPE01. So, we were over the moon to hear that it has won a Communication Arts Award for best Typeface Design. Out of over 1,100 entries to this year’s competition just 137 were selected by the jury and awarded across fifteen different categories.
Now in its 13th year, the annual Typography Competition by Communication Arts celebrates the best use of typography, new typeface designs, calligraphy and hand lettering. All winners will be featured in the January/February 2023 issue of Communication Arts, both in print and online.

Hot on the heels of the extension of Pangea’s European-focused language support (Latin, Extended Cyrillic, Greek, Vietnamese) and the release of Pangea Afrikan (Latin-based support for 360 African and indigenous North American languages; Free Standard License!), we are pleased to share that Pangea Arabic and Hebrew are in the works and coming very soon.
Currently in the very capable hands of Azza Alameddine, who’s working on the Arabic and Yanek Iontef and Daniel Grumer who are working on the Hebrew, they will be available in a few weeks.

In one of our newest use cases for Pangea, there is a meeting of values and design minds. The Austrian construction company Gropyus believes that just like digital services and technologies, housing should also function as a subscription model, with the residents as users and the home as a place that constantly updates itself.
While Gropyus’ timber-hybrid hardware is largely standardized, their complete smart home network is completely customizable. The Gropyus operating system monitors the building’s ecological footprint, making it a cradle-to-cradle optimized zero-energy home. When looking for a font that would reflect their own sustainable values and ethos, Pangea was the perfect fit, combining comfort and function. On the Gropyus website as well as in the app, Pangea and Pangea Text perform excellently, exuding confidence and credibility.

Ulrike Rausch’s playful and eye-catching script font, Supermarker is put to expert use in a brand new set of teaching material by Jana Heinz. Aimed at primary school children to teach them about sustainability, Jana developed a range of materials and a mascot called the Environment Agent that guides students through six stations each with a different task: Resources, Nutrition, Waste, Consumption, CO₂ in everyday life and Eco-labelling. The children are made aware of these topics in a playful way and learn how to deal with raw materials and their own consumption in a reflective way.
When designing the teaching materials, Jana Heinz always paid attention to the children’s perspective and this strongly influenced the typography and visual hierarchies. Supermarker’s authentic and lively appearance lends itself perfectly to conveying the messages in a fresh and engaging manner.
