The Fontwerk Family is expanding! We’re overjoyed to introduce Hamster 2.0, our cutest and most colorful font! Also in this month’s edition, we share a special use case for Pangea, there’s a top event tip with our very own master of calligraphy, Andreas Frohloff, and we’ve got some sad news about a beloved Berliner type institution. |

| | Warning: May contain cute fontsOnce we have welcomed a typeface into our family, we nurture and care for it lovingly. And just like in real life, sooner or later this deep affection leads to the family growing. Most recently, our cutest font brought us this joy: Hamster has had offspring in the form of lowercase letters and five new color variants. Joe Stitzlein’s ‘colorful playground for designers’ was our first color font two and a half years ago, which also earned us our first TDC Award (Certificate of Typographic Excellence) thanks to SNASK’s unique release campaign. The rounded ends of Hamster and the bold font styles are reminiscent of the cute rodents’ chubby cheeks and this appears even more so in the newly designed lowercase letters. The brand new colors Grape Soda, Barbecue, Raspberry, Indigo and Burgundy are darker than the eight familiar combinations and are more suitable for light backgrounds. They are also designed to conform and to pass the WCAG contrast standards (W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). This brings the total number of fonts available to 15 variable and 90 static fonts. Existing customers who have purchased the complete package can download them free of charge through their customer account! For everyone else, the collection is available for less than the price of four individual fonts. This eliminates the need to decide on the right color and makes it worthwhile to simply fill your paint palette with the maximum selection. | |

 | | Second cover page of the 2023 Sustainability Report from MSC Cruises, set in Pangea | |
|
| | Pangea takes MSC Cruises on a new brand voyageWe absolutely love it when we see companies taking the plunge with a revamped look, especially when it includes one of our typefaces. MSC Cruises is the third largest cruise brand in the world and is renowned for its luxurious ships, Mediterranean hospitality and exclusive travel experiences. Across the globe, MSC Cruises employs 24,000 people in 45 countries and its multilingual website reaches audiences in 66 markets and welcomes them in 38 languages. So when it came to finding a font that could speak to all of MSC’s customers and carry the brand across the globe, Pangea’s multilingual talents caught the eye of the design company Magic Pencil. Coupled with MSC Cruises’ desire to become more environmentally conscious, Pangea’s impeccable sustainable credentials made it the perfect fit. The Light, Regular and SemiBold styles of Pangea are now used for the website while Pangea Light, Regular, SemiBold, SemiBold Italic and Bold are employed across all printed materials. | |

Don’t miss this wonderful event in central Germany! Andreas Frohloff, our retired but still freelance Type Director, is giving a calligraphy seminar in Wernigerode and talking about digital type design using the example of Neue DIN in an artist talk. Join him for an unforgettable and pun-filled weekend covering the basics through to the free application of calligraphy. ↗ |

© Photo: Franziska Schönberner Speaking of Neue DIN, even the legendary Buchstabenmuseum’s signature font couldn’t prevent it from having to close after 20 years. The enormous increase in costs, the lack of cultural support from the city of Berlin and the decline in visitors since the pandemic has led to its closure. We are so very saddened by this loss and would like to extend our hugest thanks to Barbara Dechant and her dedicated team for creating the most extraordinary museum in our city, which we have been able to visit and enjoy over the years. For anyone who would like to say goodbye in person, you can still do so until October 5. They are still looking for long-term storage for their collection. For this, they need support and donations. ↗ |
